Professor the Hon. Stephen Martin AO has had a long and distinguished background in the Australian Parliament, academia and the private sector. 
Born and raised in ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½, Professor Martin’s early career was as a high school teacher, University lecturer, State Government town planner, Council Alderman and first grade rugby league referee in the Illawarra.
Professor Martin represented the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½-based electorates of Macarthur and Cunningham in the Australian Parliament 1984-2002. In Government, he served as Chairman of the Inquiry into the Australian Banking Industry, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Speaker of the House of Representatives. As a member of the Shadow Cabinet, he held portfolios in Defence, Small Business, and Trade and Tourism.

After retiring from Parliament, Professor Martin re-entered academia at the University of ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½. He subsequently held several senior executive roles including President/Chief Executive Officer of the University of ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ in Dubai, Pro Vice Chancellor International at Victoria University, Melbourne and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Strategy and Planning) at Curtin University of Technology, Perth. 
Professor Martin has held several senior roles in the business and not-for-profit sectors. These included as Chief Executive, Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA; Director, Illawarra Steelers; and Chairman/Director, Family of League Foundation and Playgroup Australia He is currently Chairman and Independent Director of the Bank of China (Australia) Ltd, He has undertaken several strategic and change management roles in the private and public sectors.

Professor Martin’s contribution to the Parliament of Australia, charitable organisations, regional sport and education was recognised in the Queen’s Honours in June 2022 where was awarded the Order of Australia.  
His interests are in education, economics, politics, corporate governance, financial services and sport, particularly the St George Illawarra Dragons in the NRL.
