From 27 July – 2 August, libraries across Australia will celebrate Library & Information Week. This year’s theme, “Truth Be Told”, shines a spotlight on misinformation and disinformation, asking: how do we trust information in an increasingly complex digital world?
Like a light in the dark, libraries continue to guide us by providing trusted expertise, critical literacy skills and access to reliable information.
At UOW Library, we help students, researchers and staff develop the skills needed to evaluate information, engage with technology and use knowledge responsibly.

As Library & Information Week reminds us, the truth does not always reveal itself. ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ing it requires curiosity, critical thinking and the confidence to question what we read, watch and create. These are skills libraries have championed for generations, and they are more relevant than ever in the age of AI.
The role of the Library in AI and information literacy
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly changing the way we search for information, and how we learn, create and communicate. AI tools can summarise information, generate content and answer questions in seconds.
Yet AI tools can also reproduce bias, obscure sources, and present inaccurate information with confidence. Understanding how these technologies work and knowing their limitations is an essential information literacy skill today.
UOW Library is helping students and staff build these capabilities through a growing range of resources and support services. The Library's online guides provide practical advice on generative AI, digital skills, information literacy, research practices and the effective use of Microsoft Copilot for study and research.
Library-developed AI and digital literacy resources have attracted strong engagement, reflecting growing interest across the University community.
Experience “Hello AI!”
As part of our work in AI and information literacies, staff and students are invited to explore Hello AI! - a pop-up experience currently installed in the UOW ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ Campus Library.
Developed in partnership with Tactical Tech, Hello AI! is designed to demystify artificial intelligence and encourage critical conversations about its impact on society. The exhibition explores questions such as:
- What is AI actually doing behind the scenes?
- Who is shaping these technologies and whose interests do they serve?
- How does AI influence what we see, know and believe?
- How can we use AI responsibly and ethically?
Rather than presenting simple answers, Hello AI! encourages curiosity, questioning and informed decision-making, skills that sit at the heart of both information literacy and lifelong learning.
The pop-up experience also reflects the Library’s evolving role. It is a visible expression of how libraries are supporting contemporary information, digital and AI literacy, and creating opportunities for students and staff to engage with emerging technologies in thoughtful and practical ways.
