Education Minister Jason Clare officially opens new Civic Place campus as student demand in region continues to grow

The Federal Minister for Education the Hon Jason Clare MP officially opened the University of ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½’s (UOW) new UOW Liverpool campus today (Thursday 19 March), alongside UOW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor G.Q. Max Lu AO and Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Lu said the new campus was a significant step in UOW’s long-term commitment to the South Western Sydney region.

“Most of our students are from the local community and many are the first in their family to attend university, which is why campuses like Liverpool matter,” Professor Lu said.

“They create opportunities close to home. Demand for accessible world-class education in South Western Sydney is growing and we are expanding our course offerings to meet the needs of this vibrant community.”

UOW established a campus in Liverpool in 2017 with just over 240 students. Today, more than 1,600 students study at UOW Liverpool. Around 85 per cent of UOW Liverpool’s students come from South West and Western Sydney, highlighting the strong connection with the local community.

More than half of the students at the Liverpool campus are studying health-related disciplines, including more than 600 students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing. The purpose-built campus brings together advanced teaching and research facilities in cyber security, health and biosciences with modern learning and collaboration spaces designed to connect students, researchers and industry partners.

This year UOW Liverpool expanded its courses to include Exercise Science, Medical and Health Sciences and Social Work, building on strong foundations in nursing, education, business and law. New programs planned for 2026 will continue to be developed in consultation and partnership with local industry to help meet emerging workforce needs across South Western Sydney.

Minister Clare said the new campus would help expand access to higher education in one of Australia’s fastest growing regions.

“Growing up in Western Sydney a lot of my friends felt like university was somewhere else for someone else,” Minister Clare said.

“Campuses like UOW Liverpool bring university closer to where people live and open the doors wider to students from the outer suburbs.

“That’s central to the ambition of the Universities Accord and to building the skilled workforce Australia needs.”

Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun

Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun said: “Our goal in Liverpool was to become a university city - and now it's happening with UOW's significant investment at Civic Place.

“This is going to provide the children of Southwest Sydney - our children - the opportunity to reach their full potential.

We never had this when we were growing up but now our kids will.”

The next stage of development is the Helix Hub at Civic Place, currently under construction and expected to open in 2028, further strengthening collaboration between education and industry.
