If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

Overview

If you're interested in research and want to explore an area of early childhood education in greater depth, the Bachelor of Education (The Early Years) Honours program is offered in your fourth year of study. Entry is by application and merit and is available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education - The Early Years.

You will investigate a topic of your choice focused on children from birth to five, while developing advanced research, critical thinking and analytical skills. You will work with experienced academic supervisors, examining questions that contribute to a deeper understanding of children's learning, development, health and wellbeing.

Honours can be a valuable pathway if you're considering research, postgraduate study or careers that require advanced investigation and evidence-based practice. You'll develop transferable skills in collecting, analysing and applying data to evaluate and improve early childhood teaching practice.

Working closely with two supervisors, you will undertake a major research project based on a topic that aligns with your interests and supervise expertise.

You can complete either a traditional thesis or a journal article-based thesis of up to 10,000 to 15,000 words. Depending on your research question, your project may use qualitative, quantitative or mixed-methods approaches to investigate an aspect of early childhood education.

Throughout the year, you will gain hands-on research experience, learn how to gather and analyse evidence, and develop skills in academic writing and research communication. The program culminates in a thesis or project that presents and disseminates your findings.

Admissions information

A range of admission options are available for students of all ages and academic backgrounds. The procedures governing admission are defined in UOW's , and the UOW College .

A student wishing to undertake the Honours program must be enrolled in either the Bachelor of Education – The Early Years or the Bachelor of Education – The Early Years (Dean’s Scholar).

Students who have achieved a high level of academic performance in the first three years of their degree may apply to complete the fourth year at the Honours level, provided they meet the following entry requirements:

  • Completion of all required 100-, 200-, and 300-level subjects prior to admission to Honours (please review the Honours Subject checklist).
  • Achievement of an approved standard of performance (WAM of 75+) during the first, second, and third years of the undergraduate degree.
  • A suitable study proposal.
  • A suitable and willing primary supervisor and co-supervisor

Compulsory Work Based Placement
This course contains approximately 88 days of compulsory work-based placements, completed over 18 weeks (totaling 616 hours, at 34 hours per week) throughout the degree.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

  • Record Check

    New enrolling students will be required to complete the new online and clearance must be obtained prior to attending Professional Experience.

    Please note: Professional Experience is a compulsory component embedded in our undergraduate and Master of Teaching courses. Therefore it is an expectation that students who participate in these courses are capable of meeting the demands of navigating their own way to, from and around the Professional Experience contexts (e.g. school sites). It needs to be noted that the off-campus environment is beyond the control of UOW.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

    Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.
