If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

Overview

Curious about how our environment works and the challenges affecting its future? The Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours) gives you the scientific knowledge, practical experience, and research capability to investigate complex environmental issues and help address them. 
 
This practical and multidisciplinary degree explores environmental challenges through environmental science, biology, chemistry, Earth science, geography, policy, and management. You'll examine how natural systems function, how human activities affect them, and how environmental challenges can be managed sustainably. 
 
Hands-on learning is built into the course through fieldwork, laboratory investigations, and environmental data analysis. In your final year, you'll complete an embedded honours research project, investigate a specialised environmental topic, and produce a thesis. This gives you valuable research and applied science experience before graduation. 
 
Graduates are prepared for opportunities in environmental consulting, conservation, government, sustainability, natural resource management and research, with pathways into postgraduate study also available

Environmental science is a multidisciplinary field that draws on a range of scientific disciplines to understand and respond to environmental challenges. Throughout your degree, you'll investigate environmental issues through biological, chemical, Earth science, geographic, and management perspectives, developing the skills to evaluate complex problems and support informed decision-making.  
 
A strong focus on practical learning means you'll spend significant time undertaking fieldwork and laboratory investigations. You'll gain experience in environmental sampling and monitoring, geospatial mapping, scientific reporting, and environmental data analysis. Learning takes place across diverse environments, including coastlines, rainforests, freshwater systems, forests, escarpments, and mining landscapes. 
 
Taught by active researchers working in a range of fields, you’ll explore contemporary issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, sustainability, and natural resource management.

    Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study, practical work and placements.
