If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

If you’re a non-school leaver (e.g., completed Year 12 previously and/or have a TAFE qualification or equivalent), you can apply directly to UOW.

Overview

Are you fascinated by oceans, coastlines, and marine life?

The Bachelor of Marine Science gives you the knowledge and practical skills to understand and help protect the environments you care about. You'll explore the interconnected systems that shape marine environments, from marine biodiversity and ecology to oceanography and chemistry.  
 
While marine biology is an important part of the degree, you'll also study the science by examining the physical, chemical, and ecological processes that influence marine environments. You'll learn how these systems interact and how they support communities, industries, and ecosystems. 
 
As you build scientific knowledge, you'll learn how evidence informs conservation, environmental management, and the policies and decisions that shape our oceans' future.

You'll also develop practical skills in fieldwork, laboratory investigations, and environmental data analysis while studying in the diverse coastal environments of the NSW South Coast.

The best way to understand marine environments is to experience them firsthand. With easy access to beaches, estuaries, rocky shores, and offshore environments, the NSW South Coast becomes your living laboratory. Here, you'll explore marine ecosystems in the places you're studying, gaining insights that go beyond textbooks and lectures.  
 
Practical learning is embedded throughout the degree. Depending on your subject choices, you might: 

  • Collect plankton samples from a boat and analyse them in the lab. 
  • Survey marine life on local rocky shores.
  • Use coding, GIS, and spatial tools to create maps and analyse data.
  • Investigate marine organisms through hands-on lab work.
  • Join field trips exploring fisheries and aquaculture.
  • Work alongside researchers on independent projects. 

These experiences help you develop the technical and analytical skills increasingly sought by employers across marine, environmental, and sustainability-focused industries. 
 
You'll learn from researchers working on marine mammals, animal behaviour, fisheries and aquaculture, coastal ecology, Antarctic ecosystems, and ocean management  
 
Strong connections with the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) provide additional insight into marine policy, law, and decision-making, helping you understand how scientific evidence influences real-world outcomes.  
 
The degree offers flexibility to explore areas such as conservation, environmental management, policy, geospatial analysis, and research through your elective choices. You can also undertake independent research projects and work alongside active research teams, creating a pathway into honours and further study.

  • Academic Entry Requirements

    Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

    To succeed in your chosen course, you should have completed relevant subjects in senior high school or other qualifications. For more information, refer to UOW's Entry Requirements page.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study, practical work and placements.
