Overview

Study a Bachelor of Primary Education and prepare to teach Kindergarten to Year 6 at Australia's #1 university for undergraduate Teacher Education (QILT, 2025).

You'll learn how children learn, develop and thrive, while building the knowledge and practical skills to support their academic, social and emotional wellbeing. A strong theory-to-practice focus sets this course apart, with early school observations, immersion visits and professional experience placements helping you connect what you learn at university with contemporary classroom practice.

Unlike secondary teachers, who typically specialise in one or two subject areas, primary teachers teach across multiple learning areas and work closely with the same children throughout the school year. This gives you the opportunity to build meaningful relationships and support children's growth over time.

This degree prepares you to teach across public, independent and catholic schools. There is an option to begin studies in Theology and Religious Education through UOW’s partnership with BBI-TAITE. There are also opportunities to pursue a mathematics specialisation or complete an honours research project within this degree.

Graduates pursue careers as primary school teachers, community educators, curriculum designers, education consultants and educational leaders.

You'll develop an understanding of how to support learners with diverse backgrounds, abilities and learning needs, while critically evaluating the role of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in contemporary classrooms.

Bring theory to life through a range of hands-on learning experiences. Learn from academics and researchers connected to The Early Start Institute, gain practical science teaching experience in UOW's Maker Space, and analyse filmed classroom scenarios in simulated teaching environments designed to help you apply educational concepts before entering the classroom.

Many tutors are practising teachers who bring current classroom experience into their teaching. You'll also benefit from connections with schools and engagement with organisations such as the NSW Department of Education, providing insight into current educational practice, professional expectations and career pathways.

Accreditation & professional recognition

This degree is accredited and recognised as a national professional teaching qualification. All students will receive a national English/Literacy specialisation on successful completion of the program. A NSW specialisation in Mathematics/Numeracy is also available to students with relevant interest and aptitude.

Students seeking work outside NSW or Australia are advised to check with potential employers and other teacher registration authorities for any additional requirements.

  • Academic Entry Requirements

    Applicants must achieve the required score in a previous qualification, equivalent to completing at least 13 years of schooling in Australia.

    To succeed in your chosen course, you should have completed relevant subjects in senior high school or other qualifications. For more information, refer to UOW's Entry Requirements page.

Compulsory Work Based Placement
This course contains approximately 110 days of compulsory work-based placements, completed over 22 weeks (totaling 770 hours) throughout the degree. Placements usually occur in Illawarra, Shoalhaven, Southern Highlands, and Southern and South Western Sydney schools. Students can also apply for ‘out-of-area’ (rural NSW) or overseas professional experiences. Each student must complete placements in at least two different schools.  To be eligible for the first placement, students must complete 42 credit points, plus complete the subject Mathematics Foundations (EDMM101).

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

  • Record Check

    New enrolling students will be required to complete the new online and clearance must be obtained prior to attending Professional Experience.

    Please note: Professional Experience is a compulsory component embedded in our undergraduate and Master of Teaching courses. Therefore it is an expectation that students who participate in these courses are capable of meeting the demands of navigating their own way to, from and around the Professional Experience contexts (e.g. school sites). It needs to be noted that the off-campus environment is beyond the control of UOW.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

    Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.
