Overview

If you're passionate about a subject area and want to become a high school teacher, the Bachelor of Secondary Education is a NESA-accredited degree that combines in-depth disciplinary study with the knowledge, skills and classroom experience needed to teach students in Years 7-12. Most students can also broaden their future teaching opportunities by studying a second teaching area through a minor.

At Australia's #1 university for undergraduate Teacher Education (QILT, 2025), you'll begin building classroom experience from second year through professional experience placements and school-based learning in local high schools. As you progress, you'll take on increasing teaching responsibility and, in your final year, may be eligible for conditional accreditation, allowing you to work in a high school while completing your degree. Across the course, you'll complete 80 days of professional experience in secondary school settings.

Depending on your teaching area, you could learn in science laboratories, undertake fieldwork, stage a theatre production, explore how cells divide and how diseases such as cancer develop, or build practical skills through movement, performance and technology-based learning.

This degree prepares you to teach across public, independent and catholic schools. There is an option to begin studies in Theology and Religious Education through UOW’s partnership with BBI-TAITE.

The course combines three areas of learning: disciplinary studies, education studies, and teaching methods. You'll build expertise in your chosen teaching area, explore how young people learn and develop, and learn how to teach your subject in a secondary school setting. Core education subjects are shared with Primary Education students and explore topics such as adolescent development, science of learning, inclusion, classroom environments and Aboriginal education, while discipline-specific teaching methods focus on how to teach your chosen subject area.

A highlight of the degree is the opportunity to learn from practising teachers, particularly in the teaching methods subjects. As many are currently teaching in schools, they bring contemporary classroom examples, lesson resources, assessment practices and practical insights directly into your learning experience.

You'll also have opportunities to learn within a local public high school before your major placements. These school-based experiences help you connect educational theory with classroom practice while building confidence in lesson planning, classroom management and student engagement. Beyond the local area, you can seek placement opportunities in rural and regional communities from third year.

While many graduates pursue careers as secondary teachers, the skills developed through the degree can also open pathways into curriculum development, education departments, educational technology organisations, museums, community and youth programs, not-for-profit organisations and contributing to education policy. Teaching can also lead to leadership opportunities within schools, education systems, accrediting bodies and government agencies focused on areas such as wellbeing, attendance and educational improvement.

  • Academic Entry Requirements

    Applicants must achieve the required score in a previous qualification, equivalent to completing at least 13 years of schooling in Australia.

    To succeed in your chosen course, you should have completed relevant subjects in senior high school or other qualifications. For more information, refer to UOW's Entry Requirements page.

Compulsory Work Based Placement
This course requires a total of 560 hours of compulsory placements over 16 weeks (at 35 hours per week). Each student must complete placements in at least two different schools.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study, practical work and placements.

  • Record Check

    New enrolling students will be required to complete the new online and clearance must be obtained prior to attending Professional Experience.

    Please note: Professional Experience is a compulsory component embedded in our undergraduate and Master of Teaching courses. Therefore it is an expectation that students who participate in these courses are capable of meeting the demands of navigating their own way to, from and around the Professional Experience contexts (e.g. school sites). It needs to be noted that the off-campus environment is beyond the control of UOW.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

    Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.
