Research Integrity Advisors (RIAs) are the first point of contact if you have questions about responsible research practices. 

RIAs are experienced researchers tasked with promoting and fostering a responsible research culture and are on hand to provide independent advice on good or questionable research practices related to authorship, supervision, data management, use of funding, publishing, conflicts of interest, peer review and more. RIAs can help you to understand and interpret the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (the Code), which applies to all researchers.

The Research Integrity Office coordinates a network of RIAs across all faculties. Staff and student researchers, including HDR candidates, with questions, concerns or in need of guidance or advice pertaining to research integrity are welcome to approach any RIA from any discipline.

The Research Integrity Advisor (RIA) role is defined by the (“the Code”) .

Our RIAs have a strong understanding and track record of responsible research practice, modelling these values and displaying personal attributes including professionalism, discretion, sensitivity, approachability and impartiality.

UOW has developed a Research Integrity Advisor (RIA) Handbook to orient RIAs into the network and provide guidance for their role. The RIA Handbook can be found on the page.

  • Provide knowledgeable, informal advice and guidance on responsible research practices to all researchers – staff and students
  • Provide confidential / anonymous advice however if details of a potential breach are disclosed during the discussion, an RIA has an obligation to report it. Additionally, certain issues (eg: that pose a threat to health and safety) may need to be escalated. The RIA will discuss options available with you which can include presenting your concern initially as a hypothetical.
  • Identify available options that may assist to resolve your concern
  • Identify the relevant policies, procedures and guidelines to assist with your query or concern
  • Provide research integrity advice to delegates tasked with local resolution of issues
  • Assist with local resolution of issues (e.g.: providing policy advice to a team working through a pre-publication authorship dispute)
  • Assist with framing a concern in a research integrity context
  • Provide options for reporting a potential breach
  • Direct you to options available for wellness support

 

  • Advocate for you or another member of staff
  • Make contact on your behalf with a person that is the subject of your concern
  • Investigate an issue
  • Manage or provide any advice on bullying or harassment. You will be directed to discuss such allegations with an appropriate delegate. Advice can also be sought from the Complaints Management Centre who can assist with reporting matters
  • Assist with completing ethics applications. Please contact one of our Human Ethics Advisors or email uow-humanethics@uow.edu.au or uow-animalethics@uow.edu.au for assistance.
  • Choose not to disclose a potential breach of the Code. Under the Code, all researchers have a responsibility to report suspected breaches of the Code. RIAs are not excluded from this responsibility. The RIA will discuss the level of confidentiality they are able to provide and the options available to you, including presenting your concern initially as a hypothetical.

Research Integrity Advisors are required to adhere to the UOW .

It is recognised that there is the potential for a conflict of interest if the RIA is the source of the concern, works closely with a person raising the concern or works with the person who is the subject of the concern. For this reason, researchers are able to contact any RIA in the network. An RIA has an obligation to disclose any conflicts of interest they are aware of that may impact on their ability to provide unbiased advice and guidance. In this case, you will be referred to another RIA or the Research Integrity Office.
