If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

Overview

The Bachelor of Information Technology (Dean's Scholar) is designed for high-achieving students who want to challenge themselves academically while exploring the full breadth of information technology. You'll study the same comprehensive IT curriculum as those studying the Bachelor of Information Technology, building knowledge across programming, data management, systems analysis and design, networks and communications, cyber security, web technologies, project management and professional practice.

As a Dean's Scholar student, you'll receive special privileges throughout your studies, including accelerated learning opportunities and academic mentoring. You'll complete the normal course requirements for the degree while participating in an enriched academic experience designed for high-achieving students. You will also be encouraged to continue your studies through Honours and research programs.

You don’t need to arrive as an expert programmer. The course is designed to progressively build your technical capability while helping you discover where your interests lie.

Choose from listed majors, or follow a broader advanced IT pathway. Graduates are prepared for careers across software, systems, cyber security, networking, cloud computing, consulting and web development, and graduate with an Australian Computer Society accredited qualification.

Places are limited each year. After one year of full-time study in a relevant degree, you may be eligible to apply for a transfer into the Dean's Scholar degree if you achieve a weighted average mark (WAM) of 80.

Technology is constantly evolving, so the ability to adapt, solve problems and apply technical knowledge is just as important as learning specific tools. Throughout the degree, you’ll work on practical projects that help you build these capabilities across a range of technology disciplines.

You might develop machine learning models to tackle challenges such as spam email detection, sentiment analysis or house price prediction. Other projects explore intelligent systems and advanced problem-solving, including autonomous technology simulations, image-recognition applications and optimisation challenges involving large datasets and interconnected systems. These experiences help you apply theory in realistic scenarios while developing programming, analytical and problem-solving skills.

In your final year, you’ll complete a team capstone project based on a workplace brief inspired by industry or provided directly by an industry partner. This experience brings together the technical, project management and communication skills developed throughout the degree while giving you experience working on a problem with real-world relevance. Previous industry-connected projects have involved organisations including Whale Logistics, Devika ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ and Micromax.

The degree also offers flexibility throughout your studies. You’ll complete foundational subjects shared with students from Computer Science and Business Information Systems before choosing a direction that aligns with your interests. You can specialise through the Network Design and Management or Web Design and Development majors, or follow a no-major pathway and build expertise across multiple areas of IT.

Beyond the classroom, there are additional opportunities such as the School of Computing and Information Technologies annual autumn TechExpo, exchange programs and entrepreneurship initiatives through iAccelerate provide additional ways to expand your experience, build professional networks and showcase your work.

  • Academic Entry Requirements

    Applicants must achieve the required score in a previous qualification, equivalent to completing at least 13 years of schooling in Australia.

    To succeed in your chosen course, you should have completed relevant subjects in senior high school or other qualifications. For more information, refer to UOW's Entry Requirements page.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

    Students may be granted exemption from certain first year subjects.

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.
