If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

The Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences (Honours) (Dean’s Scholar) is a program for high-achieving students, designed to provide an enriched educational experience and encourage you to continue to further studies and research. This degree will equip you with the tools you need to explore real-world challenges and generate new knowledge. As a Dean's Scholar, you may be invited to participate in networking, enrichment and mentoring opportunities that will give you a valuable edge when entering the job market.

This degree provides insight into the structure and function of the human body at all levels of organisation. This knowledge can be used directly to work alongside other health professionals within the medical research and clinical health fields in both private industry and hospital settings and a variety of careers.

It is the medical and health professionals in their various roles that are involved in the development of therapies, application of diagnostic methods and treatments associated with health and disease.

A flexible, yet rigorous degree, the Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences (Honours) (Dean’s Scholar) is designed specifically for students who wish to study the scientific basis of human structure, function, and health. The first year covers the core sciences, while in second year you choose electives from a wide selection of subjects such as pathophysiology, exercise and cardio-respiratory physiology, genetics, molecular biology, immunology, Indigenous studies, public health, and all specialised areas within chemistry, with potential to also create minors in many of these and other areas to follow your passions.

Built into the fourth year of the course, the honours aspect of your degree requires you to undertake a substantial piece of original scientific research, developing essential research skills alongside critical and integrative thinking.

  • Academic Entry Requirements
    Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

    To succeed in your chosen course, you should have completed relevant subjects in senior high school or other qualifications. For more information, refer to UOW's Entry Requirements page.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study, practical work and placements.

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.
