If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Overview

Curious about how diseases work, how genes influence health, and how scientists make new discoveries? 
 
The Bachelor of Medical Biotechnology (Honours) is for curious problem-solvers who want to understand life at the molecular level and use science to tackle real-world health challenges.  
 
You'll investigate the biological processes behind health and disease, and explore how scientific discoveries, data, and emerging technologies can drive new therapies and biotechnology innovations. 
 
You'll build expertise in:

  • Molecular biology and genetics.
  • Biochemistry and chemistry.
  • Disease mechanisms and therapeutic development.
  • Bioinformatics and biological data analysis.
  • Experimental design and scientific research.

Through extensive laboratory experience and a guaranteed honours research project in your final year, you'll develop the skills of a professional scientist. You'll design experiments, investigate scientific questions, and apply knowledge across biology, data, and emerging technologies. 
 
Graduate ready for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, laboratory science and medical research, as well as further study pathways including PhD and postgraduate medicine.

From your first year, you'll gain hands-on laboratory experience and learn how scientists investigate questions that don't yet have answers. As your skills grow, you'll move from structured practical activities to designing experiments, analysing complex data, and developing your own research  
 
A defining feature of the course is the integrated honours year, which includes a guaranteed research project sourced from UOW's research community. You'll complete an independent investigation, build experience in scientific communication, grant writing, and intellectual property, and graduate with the practical research experience many students don't gain until postgraduate study. 
 
You'll learn from active researchers and gain insight into contemporary scientific challenges in areas such as cancer biology, genetics, neurodegenerative disease, and protein biochemistry. 
 
Strong links with UOW's Molecular Horizons research institute give you exposure to contemporary research environments, advanced technologies and the scientific challenges shaping the future of healthcare and biotechnology. 
 
Beyond laboratory skills, you'll develop capabilities that are increasingly sought after across research and industry, including: 

  • Computational biology and bioinformatics.
  • Coding and biological data analysis.

    Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load
